Panic at the disco

behind the scenes

The 2018 European Music Awards was in the Bilbao exhibition centre in Northern Spain. MTV came up with the idea of Brendon Urie lead singer of Panic at the Disco, abseiling down the skyscraper section of the building on to stage for his performance of ‘High Hopes’.

We worked with an amazing Stunt team lead by Roy Taylor at ‘The Fall guy stunts’. Respect to Adam Collins our Actor / stuntman who did the drop from the top numerous times for us to set up the shots for Brendons decent. It was an eventful shoot working off a narrow gantry on the edge of a building 300ft off the ground. I love the way the city sparkled in contrast to the modern graphic lines of the architecture of the exhibition centre. Bruce Jackson was the DOP always a pleasure never a chore.

DACIA

behind the scenes

I am very happy to work on a freelance basis with other production companies. I directed this spot for ‘Hello Charlie’ who worked alongside Indicia to produce a series of branded content films for Dacia. The brief was predominantly to celebrate the Dacia Duster and its exceptional customer satisfaction, but also to educate customers on the correct pronunciation of their brand name. The creative focused on a seventies roller disco theme, set around a new rendition of the song “That’s The Way I Like it”. Chris Stevens was the DOP cool, calm & collected as always.

It was a pleasure to work on a campaign that was so vibrant and engaging and we are all really proud of the end result.

European Music Awards london

behind the scenes

Rita Ora was hosting the European Music Awards in her home town of London, so the concept was that she was at home when she got the call about getting the job. The story follows her trains, planes & automobiles type journey across town to get to the show on time. Sadiq Khan plays a Cameo role but as his schedule was so tight, he was only available for 20 minutes. Working with the Mayor of London had its benefits, as we had a whole section of Charing Cross underground station with its own platforms either side, to film our story. The trains pulled in to the tunnel, then backed out again so we could do another take. Chris Stevens was DOP, crazy hours & not much time for setting up but the results speak for themselves.

Also ‘Working with the lads from ‘People who just do nothing’ was an absolute pleasure their natural wit & ab libbing was so much fun to work with.

Great Western Railway

behind the scenes

My all time favourite Production team - Working with producers Will Stern & Ceri Passmore AKA Dacapo studios who are just delightful in every way. We had so much fun hopping on & off trains to film this piece for Great Western Railway. Starting out in the early hours at Paddington and ending up some where near Dawlish Station on the south coast. Thankfully not in the sea! I wrote the narrative/concept which was effortlessly portrayed by our 2 young actors. This was such a joy to work on, we were also blessed by great weather for the duration of the shoot which made filming even more enjoyable than usual.

european music awards Bilbao

behind the scenes

Oscar nominee Hailee Steinfeld was asked to host the European Music awards in Bilbao, famous for its art institutions such as the Guggenheim. The story of a heist scene developed. A cross between ‘A night at the museum’ and ‘Oceans 11’ was the starting point. What was so refreshing about this job was that the majority of the crew, particularly the art & construction department were female. Recreating the inside of a major art gallery was made easier working at David Noonan’s concrete studio which was so photogenic. We had the dream team on this job, wardrobe by Ameena, art department by Laura knight, Bruce Jackson DOP and Chris Stevens on second unit. The post was edited by the one & only Reg Wrench.
